There is no one-size-fits all approach to nutrition care. Some people thrive with virtual sessions. Others find that in-person connection helps them feel safer or more focused. It is also normal for your needs to shift over time, too. If you’re considering choosing an in-person versus virtual approach to your care, or just want to talk about what’s possible, we’re here to support you. Here are a few ways in which in-person sessions can make a meaningful difference in recovery.
A Space That’s For You
For some, home is not always a private or comfortable place to open up and discuss such personal topics. Whether you share a space with roommates, family, or others, in-person sessions at an office can offer a comfortable environment where you don’t have to worry about being overheard or interrupted. Walking into a space designed for your healing can make it easier to speak freely.
More Connection & Less Distraction
Being physically present with your dietitian can allow for a more grounded experience. Without the distractions of technology like notifications or Wi-Fi issues, there’s more room to focus entirely on the session. Your dietitian is also able to notice non-verbal cues such as body language or facial expressions that may not be fully visible in a virtual session. Additionally, you may find it easier to receive the supportive energy in the room.
Being Fully Seen
Showing up in person can feel vulnerable, and that’s not a bad thing. In fact, it is often where immense growth happens. Sitting face-to-face with your dietitian can offer a deeper sense of safety and trust, which is especially important when working through body image and food-related concerns. Being fully seen (literally and figuratively) can be a powerful part of the healing process.
Supporting Focus and Accountability
For some, the physical act of leaving the house or apartment and going to a session can be motivating. It may help you feel more committed to the work you’re doing with your dietitian. Particularly for those who work or study from home, in-person sessions can be a great way to break out of your usual space, connect with someone else, and connect with yourself.
Hands-On, Experiential Learning
Some people process information best by ‘doing.’ In-person sessions provide the opportunity for more concrete experiences such as eating a meal during a session, trying new foods from nearby restaurants, reviewing hand-outs together, or practicing mindfulness exercises in real-time. These experiences can make the process feel even more tangible and less abstract.
