Specialty Areas
Below are some of the more common concerns we see in our practice. If you're looking for support with something that's not listed, please contact us, and we'll let you know if we can help, or offer referral ideas.
Disordered Eating
Disordered eating refers to a range of irregular eating behaviors that may not meet formal criteria for a diagnosed eating disorder but still significantly impact quality of life and deserve support. These may include restrictive eating, bingeing, purging, or a sense of anxiety or disconnection around eating. We can support you in rebuilding trust with your body so you can experience a more intuitive, satisfying relationship with food.
Chronic Dieting
Chronic dieting is a cycle of repeated attempts to restrict food intake that often leads to guilt, preoccupation with food, and ultimately a fraught relationship with eating. We help you break the diet cycle and find a more sustainable, peaceful way of nourishing yourself.
Body Image Concerns
Body image concerns can range from mild dissatisfaction to debilitating distress about one's appearance and are closely intertwined with eating behaviors. We provide a compassionate space to explore and challenge internalized beliefs about bodies, weight, shape, and worth, and strategies to cultivate a more peaceful relationship with your body.
Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia nervosa is a serious eating disorder characterized by restrictive eating, intense fear of weight gain, and a body image disturbance. "Atypical" anorexia presents with the same psychological and behavioral features but in individuals whose weight falls outside the stereotypical "underweight" range, a distinction that reflects harmful weight bias in diagnostic criteria rather than any difference in severity or suffering. We provide evidence-based medical nutrition therapy for both, and collaborate closely with therapists and treatment teams.
Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia nervosa involves cycles of bingeing and compensatory behaviors such as purging, restrictive eating, or excessive exercise. Our support is aimed at interrupting the cycle, rebuilding a more regulated eating pattern, and addressing the underlying mindset that drives it.
Orthorexia
Orthorexia is an obsessive focus on "clean" eating to the point that it ultimately undermines wellbeing, and interferes with quality of life and relationships. Because "eating healthy" is so socially sanctioned, orthorexia often flies under the radar, and many sufferers may not recognize it as a problem. Rigidity around food rules is a hallmark feature, and our work focuses on loosening these rules and developing a more flexible, joyful relationship with eating.
Binge Eating Disorder
Binge eating disorder involves recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of food, often rapidly and to the point of discomfort, accompanied by feelings of shame, dissociation or loss of control. We approach treatment by developing compassion, exploring triggers, and collaborating on strategies for more attuned eating patterns.
Compulsive Exercise
Compulsive exercise involves using movement as a way to compensate for eating, manage difficult emotions, or adhere to rigid rules, even when injured, ill, or exhausted. The goal is to develop a healthier, more flexible relationship with movement that supports rather than harms wellbeing.
Relative Energy Deficit in Sport (RED-S)
RED-S occurs when an athlete isn't taking in enough energy to support the demands of their sport and normal bodily functioning. It impacts athletes of all genders and can have harmful effects on sports performance, health and mood. We work with athletes to close the energy gap and optimize nutrition while addressing disordered eating patterns that may be contributing to under-fueling.
Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED)
OSFED is a clinical diagnosis for eating disorder presentations that cause significant distress but don't meet the full criteria for anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder. OSFED is just as serious and deserving of treatment as any other eating disorder diagnosis.
Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
People with ARFID may experience highly selective eating, fear of choking or vomiting, and/or low interest in food. Unlike other eating disorders, it is not driven by body image concerns, though people with ARFID can still experience body image distress. We work collaboratively and at a pace that feels safe for you to gradually expand food intake and variety, and reduce anxiety around eating.
Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure & High Cholesterol
We offer weight-inclusive, evidence-based medical nutrition therapy for cardiovascular conditions, helping you make meaningful dietary changes without the harmful messaging that often accompanies traditional heart health advice.
Diabetes & Pre-Diabetes
Our team, including a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), provides individualized, judgement-free diabetes nutrition support that helps you manage blood sugar while maintaining a healthy relationship with food.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) & Gastrointestinal Concerns
Managing GI conditions like IBS, constipation, diarrhea, and GERD can be complicated, especially alongside a history of disordered eating. Our dietitians take a weight-inclusive, non-restrictive approach to GI nutrition that prioritizes gut health without promoting unnecessary food elimination.
Polyendocrine Metabolic Syndrome (formerly PCOS)
PMOS, previously known as PCOS, often comes with a great deal of weight-focused messaging. We offer evidence-based, weight-inclusive nutrition support for PMOS that focuses on sustainable habits and hormonal wellbeing as the target rather than weight loss.
Substance Use & Eating Disorders
Eating disorders and substance use disorders frequently co-occur and share underlying behavioral and psychological patterns. Our team has experience supporting clients navigating both, and are trained to approach this intersection with sensitivity and expertise.
LGBTQ+ Affirming Nutrition
LK Nutrition is a queer-owned practice committed to providing nutrition care that is affirming, respectful, and knowledgeable about the specific needs and experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals. All of our providers are trained in LGBTQ+ affirming care and we strive to make every client feel genuinely seen and safe.
Nutrition for Athletes
Athletes face unique nutritional demands and are also at elevated risk for disordered eating and eating disorders. Our team brings both personal and clinical expertise to athlete nutrition. We support athletes of all levels, from recreational to elite, in fueling their performance, healing their relationship with food and their body, and navigating the often complex intersection of sport and eating.
Culturally Relevant Nutrition
Food is deeply tied to culture, identity, and community. Nutrition care that ignores this can feel alienating and ineffective. LK Nutrition is committed to providing culturally humble, responsive care that honors each client's background and food traditions. As a team, we have particular lived experience with East Asian, South Asian, Jewish, and immigrant communities. We recognize that cultural humility is an ongoing practice, and we actively seek out ongoing education to better serve clients from all backgrounds.
